The Scope Art Fair

Posted: March 24, 2014 in Uncategorized
This is the second year that  the annual Scope Art Fair was held at the Moynihan Station at the main Post Office on 34th St. and 8th Ave.
This fair offers a mixture of modern art and some cutting-edge art as well.
Here are some of my select choices of the more unusual work on display:White Room Gallery, which is part of The Liquid Art System, has two amazing artists.

Paola Margherita was born in Rome and makes really fun animal sculptures with a very clever use of perspective depth.  They are made from cardboard and have a figurative aesthetic about them.

Peter Demetz was born in Bolzano.  His work takes sculptures and places them inside of picture frames.  These figures are mostly facing forward with their back to the viewer.

The Copro Gallery represents this  fascinating sculptor,  Kazuhiro Tsuj.  His work, titled  “Andy,” is a twisted version of two sculpted heads of Andy Warhol with Brillo boxes.  I’m sure Andy would have approved

The Halcyon Gallery had a nice display of sculptures by Lorenzo Quinn.  He was born in Rome, and his father was the famous Mexican-American actor Anthony Quinn.  His work is best known for expressive  recreations of human hands.  These metal sculptures are some of the best I have ever seen and have a real emotional feel about them.

Debuck Gallery in New York,  works with FC Sofia.  This artist’s crazy, zany work of painted resin and gold-plated metal  and stainless steel head of bunny, Mickey Mouse and  a bear- like character has an extremely humorous cartoon appeal.

The Karen Bach Gallery  works with this underground renegade street artist called Vinz Tictail.  His work consists of naked women’s bodies with animal heads of birds and fish.  He does paintings, sculptures and drawings.  Vinz’s  artwork is both political and playful at the same time. These hybrids look like they are straight out of a fable.

Artist EVL is the creative offspring of NYC grafffiti pioneer Erni Vales. He is inspired by Keith Haring  and his work  is street art of comic art- like characters.

Long Sharp Gallery represents Brit artist Wayne Warren.  His  current work of gold wing sculptures has  a religious  vibe about them. These wings are designed in a way that are  spiritual which  references God and Christianity.
